Why read Virgil's Aeneid? What is so great about it?

Because for two thousand years afterward just about every serious writer or poet refers to it or alludes to it at some point in his own works. Dante is one of the best examples of this, but by no means the only. Plus, they allude to it for a reason. It's a great story in itself
